£3 billion for the NHS
The NHS in England will get an extra £3 billion in funding to help it prepare for a feared winter wave of coronavirus. It will allow the NHS to continue using private hospitals when it needs extra space, and maintain the Nightingale hospitals until the end of March.
Goodbye jumbos
British Airways says it will retire all of its Boeing 747 planes - also known as the jumbo jet. BA’s fleet of 31 jumbos is the largest in the world, but now the “queen of the skies” will be grounded because fewer people are flying. The 747s make up about 10% of BA’s fleet, and they were previously due to be taken out of service in 2024.
She’s electric
The UK’s first planned gigafactory has found a site: an old RAF base in south Wales. Britishvolt launched its efforts in May to build the £1.2 billion factory which will make batteries for electric cars. It plans to start building by the middle of next year, along with a huge solar farm next door to power the plant.
