Growth to race ahead?
The UK is on track for speedy economic growth this year, and seems set to grow faster than the US economy according to Goldman Sachs. The bank predicts GDP will grow by 7.8% in 2021, driven by Britain’s rebound from the coronavirus crisis. As the vaccine rollout continues and businesses begin to reopen, the pace of the recovery seems to be accelerating.
Older workers losing jobs
The past year has seen the biggest drop in employment among over-50s since the 1980s, according to a report by the Resolution Foundation. As a group, older workers have been hit second hardest by job losses, after under-25s, and take longer to return to work. The think tank is calling for specific retraining opportunities for over-50s.
Scrap shared parental leave?
Campaigners are calling for shared parental leave (SPL) to be replaced by a “use it or lose it” policy for both mothers and fathers. Campaign groups, trade unions, and economists say the current set up, which was introduced 6 years ago, is “deeply flawed” and that many dads can’t afford to take time off.
