Payments for those self isolating
The government has announced payments of £13 per day will be given to people on low incomes who are self-isolating in areas that are deemed to be at high risk from coronavirus. The payments will be available to people who cannot work from home and who would otherwise lose income as a result of having to self-isolate.
Pent-up demand speeds up home sales
According to property portal Zoopla, in the 90 days to mid-August, a three-bedroom home has typically sold in just 24 days - 12 days quicker than the same period a year ago. Its research suggested that all types of property have been selling faster and that buyer appetite has been widely attributed to pent-up demand, the stamp duty holiday, and the nation collectively reassessing what it wants and needs from a home.
Rolls-Royce suffers record loss as travel slumps
The engineering giant, which makes jet engines, has reported record losses of £5.4bn for the first half of the year, following the drastic fall in air travel because of the coronavirus outbreak. The company is in the middle of the biggest restructuring in its history that will see the company slash its global workforce by a fifth and reduce the number of sites it has worldwide from eleven to six, including closing factories in Nottinghamshire and Lancashire.
