Brexit deal dinner
Boris Johnson will fly to Brussels today for last-ditch talks to try and resolve the sticking points that are getting in the way of a Brexit deal. He’ll have dinner this evening with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
No-deal budget?
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is planning for the economic impacts of a no-deal Brexit. He’ll stop short of delivering a full Budget in the event that trade talks fail, but he’s prepping extra support for the sectors that need it most, such as farming.
Cheap, green revolution
The transition to a low-carbon economy will cost less than expected, according to a new report. The Climate Change Committee reckons the UK can reduce emissions by 78% before 2035, for the bargain price of 1% of GDP. That’s because many clean technologies are more efficient - meaning the costs are offset by savings down the line.
Christmas comes early
Supermarkets are celebrating already, with record-breaking November sales. We spent £10.9 billion on groceries in November - partly because of the lockdown in England, and also because many people started stocking up for Christmas. Predictably, alcohol sales were also up as bars and pubs were closed.
