Boohoo is set to buy Debenhams for £50 million, in a bid to makeover the online side of the department store. Debenhams went into liquidation in December, and this deal will see the high street icon close its remaining shops. That could mean the loss of up to 12,000 jobs.
The collapsed Arcadia group is up for grabs by another online retailer, Asos. The deal is likely to include the group’s high profile brands like Topshop and Topman. But, like Boohoo, Asos isn’t interested in any of the bricks and mortar stores.
There were 13% fewer first-time buyers in 2020, compared to the year before. Sales slumped after the housing market was shut for months - and when it reopened, house prices rose and mortgages were in short supply. Despite the dip, first-time buyers accounted for 50% of overall buyers - the same as in other years.
Some Barclaycard customers will see higher minimum payments from tomorrow. The changes will be tailored to each customer, and are designed to help customers clear their debt faster. At the same time, Barclaycard will scrap the charge for exceeding a credit limit.

The government could give a £500 one-off payment to anyone in England who catches coronavirus to encourage them to self-isolate. It’s one of the ideas in a leaked document about boosting self-isolation rates. The government is concerned that some low-paid workers are not staying at home after testing positive, because they can’t afford to.
Nissan will keep making cars in Sunderland and says the plant is secure for the long term thanks to the trade deal between the UK and the EU. It means 6,000 Sunderland jobs are safe. To comply with new rules, it will move battery production nearby - currently the batteries for its Leaf electric car are imported from Japan.
Retail recovered slightly in December with a small uplift at the end of a difficult year. Retail sales dropped 1.9% in 2020 - that’s the steepest year-on-year drop since 1997. Clothing shops were hit hardest, while supermarkets and online players saw their sales boom.
The release date of the latest Bond film, No Time To Die, has been pushed back for the third time. Fans will now have to wait until 8th October for 007 star Daniel Craig to make his final appearance. It was originally slated for April 2020.

Lockdown fuelled a record year for home entertainment - British viewers spent £9 billion on keeping ourselves entertained in 2020. That’s 17% more than in 2019. With gigs and festivals cancelled it was also a bumper year for vinyl, which saw its highest sales in decades.
Retailers suffered their worst December ever last year, with sales slumping to their lowest since the pandemic began. Shoppers stayed at home and saved their money as tighter restrictions came in across the country. Early January figures show that people aren’t even tempted by discounted prices in the sales.
