Nissan’s plans to stay?

The car maker has said it might pull out of Europe and expand its UK operations (paywall) if there’s a hard Brexit. In a leaked contingency plan drawn up last year, Nissan lays out a strategy to keep building its cars in Sunderland and gain a competitive edge by avoiding high import tariffs that other brands would have to pay.

The cost of coronavirus

The Chinese central bank will lower interest rates and pump an extra 150 billion yuan (£16 billion) into the financial system, to try and reduce the economic impacts of the coronavirus outbreak. Stock markets in China have taken a sharp plunge amid investor fears over the rapidly spreading virus, but financial regulators predict that the effects on the economy, which was already slowing thanks to a trade war with the US, will be "short term".

It’s National Apprenticeship Week

Business leaders are calling for an overhaul of the system to try and boost participation in apprenticeship schemes. Fewer people are enrolling onto apprenticeships: 125,800 between August and October 2019, which was 4.7% less than the year before. Business groups want more funding for small firms, which provide 90% of apprenticeships, to help them take on and train more people.

Sick of your job?

You’re not alone. 8.6 million people pulled a sickie last year because they find work “too painful”. Research also found that Monday is the most common day to skive off. On the flip side, 12 million people went to work even though they were genuinely unwell. Why? People said they can’t afford to take the time off and don’t want the judgement from colleagues.
