PM hails jab hopes
Boris Johnson told business leaders yesterday that the best route to economic recovery is to get the coronavirus jab into as many arms as possible. He chaired the first meeting of a new business council that’s been set up to “build back better” from the crisis. The PM also reiterated his plans to launch a “green industrial revolution” to kickstart growth.
Does coronavirus support discriminate?
Campaigners are bringing a judicial review of the self-employed income support scheme (SEISS) - the equivalent of furlough for freelancers. They say that the scheme, which pays out an average of a worker’s income from the last 3 years, is short changing women who took time off work to have a baby.
Can’t wait for Budget
Businesses are running out of cash and can’t wait another six weeks until the March Budget to hear from the chancellor, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). The group, which represents 190,000 UK businesses, is asking Rishi Sunak to extend the furlough scheme, delay VAT payments, and resist calls to raise business taxes.
Shellfish behaviour
The shellfish industry is protesting against the government’s handling of Brexit bureaucracy, with 20 lorries parked in Westminster bearing slogans like “Brexit carnage”. Many fishing businesses have been unable to export their catch to the EU since the start of the year due to the reams of extra paperwork now required.
