Eating out didn't help out
The 1-minute read to get the money news you need.
Restaurants still struggling
The government’s eat out to help out scheme didn’t manage to prop up the struggling restaurant industry. Diners claimed the £10 discount on more than 100 million meals during August - but it wasn’t enough. 66% of businesses saw bookings and sales drop between June and September, according to the British Chamber of Commerce.
Subway bread “isn’t bread”
The Irish Supreme Court has ruled that Subway’s rolls are too sugary to be considered bread. Why does it matter? The sandwich maker will now have to pay 13.5% VAT on the baps - instead of the 0% that they’d have to pay if they’d won the court case. A spokesperson for the brand said: "Subway's bread is, of course, bread.”
Legalise e-scooters
E-scooters should be allowed on roads, but not on pavements, according to the government transport committee. Trials start soon to see if the self-propelled scooters can provide a green alternative to cars - without causing too many crashes.
