New Brexit law

As negotiators limber up for the 8th round of Brexit trade talks tomorrow, government ministers are planning new legislation that would override part of last year’s EU withdrawal agreement. The legislation would remove new customs arrangements, that were designed to prevent checks between Northern Ireland and Irish Republic. The government says it’s a standby plan in case trade talks fail.

Slower house price growth

House prices will grow by 2% this year according to predictions by Knight Frank. Most of that growth will be driven by areas outside London, while prices in the capital are predicted to drop by 3%. The biggest driver of price increases? Demand for more outside space.

Leasehold homes mis-sold?

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is threatening to take 4 of the UK’s biggest house builders to court. The watchdog says it has new evidence that they have mis-sold leasehold homes. Millions of homes in the UK are leasehold, and some homeowners say they’re caught in a trap of rising ground rents and unfair fees.

Extend furlough

The UK’s foremost manufacturing group, Make UK, has said the country risks losing key skills, unless the furlough scheme is extended for some industries. It also warned that the UK’s long-term competitiveness is at risk. The furlough scheme is due to end in October, but 62% of manufacturing firms say it should be extended.
