Spike in redundancies

More than twice as many people are currently at risk of redundancy than during the height of the 2008 financial crash. Between May and July this year, employers listed 380,000 jobs as “at risk”. In the past, actual redundancies don’t always match the numbers at risk, but it’s an early signal of what might happen.

Restaurants can’t make rent

Bosses of Deliveroo, Burger King, and Itsu have signed a letter calling for an extension to the rent holiday for city-centre restaurants. The current ban on commercial evictions is set to end on 30th September, and they warn that many well-known eateries are at risk of being kicked out.

Arcadia pays out

Topshop owner Arcadia has agreed to pay packages based on full salaries to its staff facing redundancy. 3 weeks ago it emerged that the retail giant was offering employees redundancy pay based on their reduced furlough wages. It’s now backed down after pressure from Unite.

Delays to flexible tickets

Rail companies are facing delays over their plans for a flexible season ticket to help workers heading back to the office part time. They want to enable commuters to use up their rail trips over a certain period of time. But the government has said the flexible fares won’t be approved in time for January, when prices are set to rise.
