Eating out fuels the economy
The hospitality sector has received a “shot in the arm”, as the “eat out to help out” scheme has seen 64 million discounted meals claimed - one for every person in Britain. Retail sales have also increased to pre-pandemic levels, thanks to relaxed restrictions.
Pension shortchange
Think-tank, Resolution Foundation, estimates that 1 in 20 employees are not receiving the pension that they are due*. Agency, part-time, temporary, and low-paid workers were found to be at the greatest risk. Workers are either not being enrolled, or are receiving contributions below the legal minimum.
HMRC crackdown on holiday homes
Landlords are being caught out for not declaring income from international holiday homes, with penalties being up to double the tax owed. The tax office now automatically collects data from foreign bank accounts, and investigators are gathering evidence from the social media accounts of suspected individuals.
Adviser comment: It’s not just foreign property income. Any foreign income whether it be foreign wages, investment income such as dividends or interest and any pensions in payment also need to be declared.
