The government could give a £500 one-off payment to anyone in England who catches coronavirus to encourage them to self-isolate. It’s one of the ideas in a leaked document about boosting self-isolation rates. The government is concerned that some low-paid workers are not staying at home after testing positive, because they can’t afford to.

Nissan stays

Nissan will keep making cars in Sunderland and says the plant is secure for the long term thanks to the trade deal between the UK and the EU. It means 6,000 Sunderland jobs are safe. To comply with new rules, it will move battery production nearby - currently the batteries for its Leaf electric car are imported from Japan.

Tiny retail bounce

Retail recovered slightly in December with a small uplift at the end of a difficult year. Retail sales dropped 1.9% in 2020 - that’s the steepest year-on-year drop since 1997. Clothing shops were hit hardest, while supermarkets and online players saw their sales boom.

No Time to see a movie

The release date of the latest Bond film, No Time To Die, has been pushed back for the third time. Fans will now have to wait until 8th October for 007 star Daniel Craig to make his final appearance. It was originally slated for April 2020.
