House price predictions

Rightmove has forecasted a 4% rise in house prices next year. It suggests the housing market will keep its momentum after booming in 2020 - for comparison, we saw a rise of over 6% this year. Why? Rightmove reckons cheap mortgage deals and consistent demand will keep prices growing, even after the stamp duty holiday ends.

Don’t hoard loo roll

Shoppers have been warned not to stockpile ahead of 1st January when the Brexit transition period ends. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) says shops are increasing their supply of loo roll, tins, and other essentials - so there’s no need to panic buy. It admitted it’s uncertain how much disruption we’ll face, but says only some fresh produce would be affected.

New nuclear plant

A new £20 billion nuclear power plant in Suffolk could provide 7% of the UK’s electricity. The government has begun talks with EDF about construction at the Sizewell C site. If it goes ahead, it would create thousands of jobs and form a reliable part of our energy mix. But campaigners say it’s too expensive compared to wind and solar power which are getting cheaper.
